Some progressive Christians like to compare the two. Is it justified? How are they different?

Christianity is Abrahamic religion, whereas Buddhism is Vedic religion. Christianity separated from Judaism around 2 thousand years ago, where as Buddhism separated from Hinduism around 2600 years ago. Christianity and Buddhism are based on different principles. Some fundamentals are similar such as love, compassion, tolerance etc. but then these concepts are present in almost all world religions.

Well, all religions cover pretty much virtues in a same way because some things are always going to be good regardless of time we live in.
What makes them different is the view on divine. Buddhism is talking of Karma (many different ones) and reincarnation while such thing is way different in Christianity. The ultimate judgement is not karma based but by God.

But there is a karma God looks at and rewards for.

I wouldn't mix Buddhism's karma with Christianity. It is just a belief that God rewards faithful. I find it funny because some churches collapsed and killed exactly those who trusted in God. While those who commit huge crimes go unpunished. Where is God in that? Where is his karm in that moment? Is he selective and help bad guys? Plot hole in the whole Christian story.

Again, God doesn't violate free agency and certain laws on how things are.
