We choose everything we do in life. We choose who we want to spend our lives with. We choose to have kids. We choose what job we want.

Most of us do, at least. Maybe not those in countries with dictatorships.

Honestly, it's tough for many to make wise choices because of the environment. I mean, how many people were raised by Marine Corps drill instructors? Think about it.
