Opposing Stoicism
Many people argue that Stoicism leads to suppression of emotions. This is one of the biggest arguments against stoicism. Stoicism can help you handle emotions, but critics say that a stoic may become emotionless at some point because they start caring less by the passage of time.
It's a mixed bag, but some people can pull off humane Stoicism.Gardener wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 8:14 pm Many people argue that Stoicism leads to suppression of emotions. I have just started studying stoicism. So far, I have not found anything problematic about it. In fact, it is a kind of philosophy that makes it cool. It can help you deal with many things such as breakup, failed marriages, and other scenarios that could kead to emotional problems.Jason wrote: Fri Jan 09, 2026 3:55 pmIt's a mixed bag, but some people can pull off humane Stoicism.Gardener wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 8:14 pm Many people argue that Stoicism leads to suppression of emotions. Stoicism is a fundamental way of thinking which is, by nature, complimentary to any other paths your thoughts logically follow to settle into a logically sound modicum of accumulated wisdom. Spirituality in any form is enhanced by the stoic state of mind. One of the key facets echoed by philosophers is that you ultimately control how you feel about your thoughts, and so you control how you react to impulses from your environment. Whether this "you" is you in the literal sense, as electrical signals in the brain, or the Holy Spirit re-awakening within us to tame our animal instincts, is not at all necessary to specify - the truth that we decide our very next action at any given moment is unavoidable. Therefore, it becomes impossible to blame others for our own misfortune, which is a massive burden off our shoulders, no longer having anyone to blame for our poor conditions, and we can work on improving our lives and move on to help those around us, as you would feel inspired to do, among other free quality-of-life upgrades you might discover while thinking like a Stoic. I also joined this forum to lurk for an unrelated reason and now I have shared this post.
