Why is that the case? Does it mean there are many ways to God?

In my opinion, almost certainly. Most of the ways for the modern man living in a developed country are through truth, integrity, love, and positivity. Others have their own destiny, being born with different circumstances and thus having different "objectives" to reach God throughout their life's experience. Being born a boy in a warrior culture where your nation depends on you to fight in a conflict for the survival of your people puts a great responsibility on the soldier, but their honorable death in battle may be what God desires, even if the pantheon they died fighting for the right to worship a false idol is misguided, the honorable and well-meaning spirit is recognized beyond death as long as we are pious and steadfast with our beliefs. My general takeaway from these ideas is: "don't stop trying as hard as you can to do the best thing for you and your loved ones"
