Human sacrifice is common in most of the ancient religions. A lot of ancient civilizations had rituals around human sacrifice,
Even the Christians used to burn women labeled as "witch" until middle ages. That was not just murder, that was a ritual of human sacrifice.

Considering they were targeting vulnerable women the Bible - strongly demands to protect, I see this as an abomination.

But then again, illiteracy was widespread. People couldn't read the Bible!

Ancient civilizations like Aztec didn't have a guide book, so it is understandable why they carried human sacrifice. But Christians had a guide book. The Christain leaders where learned men but they misinterpreted the scriptures to commit heinous crimes.

It may have been mostly non-conformist people being targeted. For instance, let's say some woman just didn't want to go to church and/or believe in God and/or traditional teachings. Well, that's their free choice. :)
